Awards
John J. Hanlon Award for Most Outstanding Graduating GSPH Student
This special award honors GSPH founder John J. Hanlon, MD, MPH, former Assistant Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service. Each spring the GSPH Student Affairs Committee meets to select the most outstanding graduating graduate student of the GSPH to be the recipient of the Hanlon Award. The faculty are asked to nominate the most outstanding student from each division. Selection criteria are based on student excellence in scholastic achievement based on GPA, research and other measures, and also on service to the GSPH, College, University and community. Each Division selects one nominee to compete for the GSPH-wide Hanlon Award. Each division nominee is recognized as that division's Outstanding Student at commencement ceremonies. The overall winner of the Hanlon Award is selected from the pool of nominees from the graduate programs by a simple majority vote of the members of the Student Affairs Committee.
The Hanlon Award winner is recognized as the most deserving of this special award honoring a man whose dedication to public health and many accomplishments exemplify all of the best qualities of a career in public health. The student, selected by the faculty, who exemplifies the wonderful characteristics of the many for whom the award is named. Distinguished GSPH Alumni Award
Each year in spring the GSPH faculty are asked to identify their alumni who have distinguished themselves in one or more of the public health disciplines and are deserving of special recognition. The Student Affairs Committee meets to select one or more of these nominees to receive the Distinguished GSPH Alumni Award that year. Many of the awardees below have continued on for further education, excelled in their fields, demonstrated exemplary good citizenship, and been recognized by the greater public health community, nationally and internationally. Many have also been recognized not only for their personal accomplishments and the recognition their achievements bring to the GSPH, but also for enriching the GSPH after graduation in other ways by giving back more directly to the educational mission of the GSPH. Guest lecturing, career and field placement advising, research mentoring, student recruitment and other contributions that do not require ongoing residence in San Diego are among the many gifts distinguished alumni have been acknowledged for over the years.
