Welcome
Administered by the Graduate School of Public Health and under the umbrella of the Institute for Public Security and Health, the Center for Public Health Security (CPHS) addresses the linkage between public health and national security with a focus on issues of infectious disease epidemics and global relations.
The center partners with public-private community leaders to promote provider and other health partner disaster preparedness, public health determination of legal powers for action, capacity in epidemic detection, alert and response, and effective emergency risk communication. The center specializes in identifying policies, actions and resources needed to cope with the global public health workforce shortage. Defined broadly, the reciprocal beneficial partnerships within the center provide research opportunities and contextual knowledge that are of great value for operational agencies, such as San Diego County, Health and Human Services as well as for businesses in our community.
The center conducts research on community disaster mitigation with a focus on vulnerable populations. The center is associated with the Masters degree in Global Emergency Preparedness and Response, and supports the development of white papers on global preparedness and response issues, the creation of an SDSU/community partner model response team with trained students, faculty, staff and community members, and the hosting of an annual Global Emergency Preparedness Public Health Summer Institute.
