Health Services Administration (HSA)The Division of Health Services Administration is one of the graduate divisions within the GSPH. It offers a Masters of Public Health (MPH) in Health Services Administration as well as a Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work with the SDSU School of Social Work. This division provides academic preparation for individuals who are interested in managing, organizing, planning, or evaluating organizations and services in the health care sector. Graduates are prepared for a full range of careers in health care administration, including management, consulting, planning, and marketing positions in a wide range of health care settings (such as hospitals, health systems, ambulatory care facilities, insurers, and managed care organizations). The HSA program is particularly proud of an approach that combines a broad-based, rigorous curriculum embodying a public health focus with a strong management orientation. This stems from a belief that individuals working within the health care system should recognize the needs of their communities from a broad public health perspective, while at the same time bringing sophisticated management skills to their job environment. In addition to accreditation held by the GSPH, the Graduate Program in Health Services Administration MPH (HSM) is accredited separately by the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). The Program is a member of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), and has an active student chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) through its association with the San Diego Organization of Healthcare Leaders (SOHL). HSA Faculty
In addition to core faculty listed above, the Division enjoys active participation and involvement by a number of part-time faculty from other Departments at SDSU and the community, including Dr. William Sterk (Professor of Finance), James Ledwith, CPA (instructor of the core accounting course), David Kraus, JD (instructor of the course on legal and ethical aspects of health care), and Stanley Pappelbaum, MD (health care strategy).
