Biography: Dr. Joni Mayer is Professor of Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences. She holds the Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Her research interests have focused on adherence to the prevention and early detection of cancer. She is particularly interested in interventions that are tailored to the environments where risky or healthy behaviors occur. Recent projects on skin cancer prevention have targeted children's outdoor recreation sites (e.g., aquatics classes and zoos), drugstores, U.S. postal carriers, and indoor tanning facilities. Dr. Mayer teaches PH800 (Grant Writing), and PH 661 (Theoretical Foundations of Health Promotion), as well as other courses.
