Scholarly Areas: Biological Monitoring of Human Populations for Measurement of Exposure, Genetic Damage or Genetic Susceptibility
Exposure Assessment for Susceptible Populations, such as Children with Asthma
Biography: Dr. P.J.E. Quintana is an Associate Professor of Environmental Health at the Graduate School of Public Health. She received her B.S. in Genetics from the University of California at Davis, her M.P.H. in Occupational and Environmental Health from San Diego State University and her Ph.D. in Environmental Health from the University of California at Berkeley. Her research focus is on a) assessing human exposure to environmental agents though measurements in biological tissues and through personal exposure monitoring and b) studying genetic and environmental influences on the body’s ability to protect against damage from toxic exposure. Recent studies include investigating children''s asthma in relation to exposure to peaks in fine particulate air pollution, and levels of toxic pollutants in house dust in homes with young children. In conjunction with researchers at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California, Tijuana, she has studied birth defects in Baja California, markers of DNA damage in placentas from a Tijuana hospital, and exposure to toxic air pollution inside vehicles crossing the US-Mexico border. She is currently the co-Director (with Dr. Steffanie Strathdee at the University of California at San Diego) of the new PhD program in Public Health, concentration in Global Health.
