Scholarly Areas: Physical Activity and Health, Reducing Risky Health-related Behaviors, Epidemiologic Methods
Biography: Dr. Richard A. Shaffer is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology and Coordinator of the Joint Doctoral Program in Epidemiology. His Ph.D. is in Epidemiology with emphasis in the health effects of physical activity. His teaching interests are epidemiologic methodology, assessment of physical activity in populations, and evaluation of community interventions to change health related behaviors. His research interests include the effects of exercise on musculoskeletal injury, sexually transmitted disease prevention, and the development and evaluation of community programs to reduce alcohol misuse. He is currently Principal Investigator on three grants: 1) reducing stress fractures in physically active women, 2) development of a program to reduce alcohol misuse in active duty military personnel; 3) evaluating health promotion programs in adolescent populations. In addition, he is an Associate Investigator on 4 grants in the areas of sexually transmitted disease prevention, unplanned pregnancy prevention, drug abuse prevention, and the assessment risky health-related behaviors in military populations.
