Scholarly Areas:

Nick's current and previous work experience in both California and the Northeast region has focused his applied research interests around finding creative and sustainable strategies to improve the health and well-being of diverse communities from inner cities to rural regions. Due to his vast organizational experience in having worked for universities, academic medical centers, large metropolitan health department, for-profit and nonprofit healthcare corporations, and political advocacy groups, Nick often serves in a role of a collaborator in getting new programs implemented through performance-based partnerships.

Biography:

Nick Macchione is a graduate of Columbia University, Johns Hopkins University and New York University. He holds masters degrees in strategic management, health services administration and healthcare policy. He is board certified in healthcare administration with the American College of Healthcare Executives and holds two professional fellowships as a Public Health Leadership Scholar with the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Creating Healthier Communities Fellow with the American Hospital Association/Health Forum. Also, his professional community involvement includes: Immediate-Past Chairman of the Community Health Improvement Partners for San Diego County; board member of the San Diego Business Healthcare Connection, board member of the State Department of Health’s California Health Interview Survey Council and Chairman of the Career Services Committee of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

Mr. Macchione has 17 years work experience in the planning, management, delivery and political advocacy of health care and human services. He has received numerous awards for his success in leading nationally recognized health reform initiatives at the federal, state, county and city levels of government. In New Jersey, he was recognized as being one of the youngest successful executive directors in the field of public health. He successfully developed an effective health care planning organization to reduce the prevalence of infectious diseases in a five county service region.

In his current role, Mr. Macchione is the Deputy Director of the County’s Health & Human Services Agency. He leads a full time staff of 700 professionals and manages the daily operations of nearly $100 million budget for numerous health and human service programs. Beyond his operational responsibilities, he has executive policy responsibilities for major countywide initiatives, such as, health insurance enrollment, alcohol/drug treatment, primary care service delivery in rural areas and school-based healthcare. In addition, for the past six years his passion for teaching has lead him to San Diego State University School of Public Health where he teaches International Health. More recently, he has taught the U.S. Healthcare System’s course at the University of California, San Diego. His interests around partnerships with universities has also led him to help develop and implement UCSD’s first Healthcare Leadership and Political Advocacy Program.
