Responsibilities

Obesity Prevention & Control in Community Recreation Centers is a 5-year study (2006-2011) funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases to design, implement, and evaluate a recreation site-based obesity prevention and control intervention for 7-9 year old children and their families by targeting physical activity and dietary behaviors. The intervention will target the home as well as community recreation centers. In addition, this project will utilize pediatricians/ medical professionals to motivate family changes that prevent and control obesity. Under supervision by the Measurement Director and the Project Manager, the Measurement Coordinator will work with the Measurement Director to accomplish the following:

  • develop data collection instruments & protocols
  • schedule & organize data collection, including planning & executing detailed measurement logistics with recreation centers & participating families
  • provide training & day-to-day supervision of data collectors in the field and project office
  • implement quality control procedures for data collection
  • recruit family participants & implement retention & tracking procedures
  • create and manage data entry programs and large-scale data sets
  • coordinate and supervise data entry staff
  • prepare key files for analysis by project statisticians

This position will receive training from the Measurement Director.

Duties also include:

  • participating in data collection, including formative assessment & pilot studies
  • assistance with IRB protocol preparation
  • performing data entry & data cleaning
  • maintaining participant tracking database
  • performing other administrative functions related to data collection & management
  • routine communication of measurement status and issues to Measurement Director
  • attending measurement trainings as required
  • other duties as assigned.

Data collection includes obtaining height, weight, and skinfold body fat measurements of children ages 7-9; distribution and collection of activity monitors with children; administering surveys & interviews with parents and recreation center staff; and observing home and recreation center environments.

Requirements:Minimum Qualifications: Equivalent to a bachelor's degree, preferably in exercise, behavioral, or health sciences. Two years progressively responsible related experience. Ability to write research protocols for data collection and data entry. Superior organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to: work well with a variety of people, particularly children and families; complete detailed work accurately and efficiently; quickly learn & follow specific research methods & procedures; multi-task, managing multiple and competing priorities; flexible in dealing with schedule changes; provide effective direction and supervision to individuals and small groups; work effectively as part of a team; take initiative; able & willing to work variable hours. Comfortable using computers, including a working knowledge of SPSS, Microsoft Office programs, e-mail, and internet. Most work will take place during after school hours and early evenings (approx. 9 am-8 pm), some Saturdays. Reliable transportation to travel and transport equipment to homes & recreation centers throughout San Diego County, fingerprint background check, valid driver's license & proof of insurance required.

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual in English/Spanish to work with Spanish speaking populations. Some graduate coursework preferred. Experience in health or behavioral science research projects or health/fitness field(s), field data collection experience, data management experience, supervisory experience, and experience working with children and/or families are highly preferred, especially experience collecting data on large-scale research projects.
