Job Title:Air Pollution Specialist

The Population Studies Section evaluates the health impacts of air pollution, particularly in sensitive populations, and manages an extensive extramural research portfolio. These activities support the Air Resources Board's (ARB) efforts to define ambient air quality standards, which are the basis of many of ARB's regulatory activities toward the protection of public health and welfare. The primary responsibilities of this Section includes planning and operation of ARB's epidemiological research and conducting analyses related to health effects from exposure to air pollutants, including criteria air pollutants and toxic air contaminants. Another priority of the Section is to provide information on environmental justice issues, such as the potential for disproportionate exposures to air pollutants in environmental justice communities. In addition, accountability studies of sensitive populations are conducted by Section staff to determine the health benefits of regulations designed to reduce air pollution. The Section is active in communicating the health effects of air pollution to the general public, local air districts, and Members of the Board and is also responsible for assisting in the scientific and administrative oversight of the extramural health studies performed in support of the Section's activities.

Requirements:The most competitive candidate will have an epidemiology or public health science background, strong technical, writing, and verbal skills; familiarity with methods and protocols employed to evaluate how air pollution impacts people and communities; the ability to interpret the health and statistical significance of research findings; experience with air monitoring and health outcomes databases; and the ability to work independently under general guidance and in cooperation with others. Familiarity with statistical methods, statistical software (such as SAS or R) is a plus.

Some travel is required.
