Job Title:Temporary Staff Position - Youth Risk Behavior

Description:Macro International Inc. is seeking staff for the 2008 Methodological Study of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS), funded by the Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This study will be conducted with approximately 6,000 students in roughly 80 schools nationwide to assess the feasibility of transitioning the national YRBS from a paper-and-pencil questionnaire to a Web-based questionnaire.

The YRBS data collection will commence immediately after a 5-day training February 1115, 2008 and will continue into April. If you have an interest in school health and can commit yourself full-time, you may wish to apply for the YRBS data collector position. If hired, you will work at various locations. Some assignments may be within driving distance of your home, while others may require air travel. (NOTE: TRAVEL REQUIREMENT IS NOT NEGOTIABLE.) This position is NOT recommended for students enrolled in spring semester courses that require weekly class attendance nor for those who for other reasons need to go home on a scheduled weekly basis.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Travel among schools to administer student surveys using internet-connected computers and paper-and-pencil booklets in computer lab and classroom settings Act as on-site liaison with school personnel
  • Regular follow up with schools and teachers
  • Complete required web-based survey documentation for each visited classroom Report to the Supervisor daily/weekly on study activities, including non-respondents Monitored submission of completed online surveys
  • Perform quality control on the collected data and forms and package them for return to the main office Submit weekly expense reports

WHEN: The YRBS training session will occur February 11-15 in Calverton, MD at Macro International Inc. Assuming acceptable performance during and the successful completion of training, you may expect to work in the field for at least 8 weeks. Some data collectors may be asked to work up to an additional 4 weeks. It is possible that the weeks worked may not be consecutive; there may be one or more weeks during which there is no activity, especially if many schools take Spring/Holiday break at the same time.

Requirements:
  • Some college. Ideal for graduate/thesis students able to work full time and have no travel limitations
  • Experience in field data collection, survey/social science research
  • Computer skills including navigating the internet, using online applications, and email
  • Familiarity working with laptop computers and/or in a computer lab setting

  • Able to read aloud well and in a clear speaking voice in large groups
  • Personal and professional demeanor
  • Punctual and able to adhere to strict time schedules
  • Well-organized
  • Capable of motivating others to cooperate and the ability to deal professionally and calmly with difficult situations
  • Ability and willingness to work and travel alone
  • Ability to do periodic stays away from home for multiple nights
  • Valid drivers license, use of a vehicle in reliable condition, and valid major credit card
Compensation:You may expect to earn $112 per day for attendance at the 5-day training and $600 per week (based on an 8-hour day and a 40-hour work week) for each full week you spend in the field. For use of your car, you will be reimbursed at the prevailing Federal reimbursement rate, which is currently $.485 per mile, plus tolls and parking. In addition, all of your allowable travel and living expenses at locations away from home will be reimbursed at actual cost within the allowable government per diem guidelines for that city/state. If you are required to travel to training by air, rail, or bus, the actual cost of coach-class fare will be pre-paid for your transportation. In addition, Macro will pre-pay for a hotel room for your stay at training.
