The Institute for Health & Aging (IHA) is an organized research unit at UCSF. The work of the Institute includes extensive and successful research, training and public service in the areas of aging, health, and health policy. In collaboration with the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), IHA will manage data and review research requests on birth defects, which is the leading cause of infant mortality in California and the nation through the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program (CBDMP). The purpose of this position is to work with a multi-disciplinary professional staff to maximize the utility of birth defects data for scientific, medical and public health needs and policy. Under the general direction of the Research Scientist III and the Branch Chief, the Demographer shall adapt and apply formal research methods and principles to research problems of an applied practical nature; determine the scope of research to be undertaken and appropriate research methodology; select and interpret data; analyze and design data systems; communicate effectively to individuals and groups related to the area of demographic research; prepare and present technical demographic reports. This position is permanently based in Sacramento, CA. |
| Requirements: | Graduation from college with any major but with extensive course work in demography, sociology, or Public Health. Degrees in sociology or Public Health should have an emphasis on demography or a related research-oriented field. Knowledge of: Principles and concepts of demography as applied in a research and statistical setting; application and interpretation of statistical techniques to demographic data; and population projection. Excellent computer skills specifically with MS Word, Excel, Project or Access databases, IT, statistics, graphing & mapping software. Excellent writing skills both orally and in writing. The incumbent will also have the ability to identify, develop, and communicate the program and/or policy implications of the quantitative and qualitative data obtained from MCAH/OFP Branch stakeholders and program/population databases. |
