MOVE/Me Muevo (Obesity Prevention & Control in Community Recreation Centers) is a 5-yr. study (2006-2011) funded by the Nat'l Institute of Diabetes and Digestive & Kidney Diseases to design, implement & evaluate a recreation site-based obesity prevention & control project in San Diego County for 7-9 year old children and their families. Under supervision of the Project Manager, the Intervention Coordinator's (IC) main responsibility will be to coordinate, implement & monitor intervention activities with 15 recreation centers and 270 parents and their children. The intervention emphasizes physical activity & healthful eating choices.

The IC will coordinate, supervise and oversee a team of 2-15 paid staff & volunteers to carry out the following proposed project activities with recreation centers and families:

  • provide education & resources, and on-site guidance & training on physical activity & healthful eating.
  • develop & maintain collaborations through consistent communication.
  • coordinate & disseminate promotional materials.
  • identify, address & execute detailed logistics.
  • advise & conduct goal setting processes & policy modifications to increase physical activity & healthful eating choices; provide ongoing feedback & recommendations.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is energetic, self-motivated & demonstrates a strong work ethic. Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in health, exercise, nutrition or behavioral sciences; recreation/leisure; or related field OR additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis. Four years of experience in an administrator, supervisor, or coordinator role. Experience working with families & elementary-age children. Superior organizational, interpersonal & communication skills, writing & speaking professionally & diplomatically.

  • Display positive role modeling through active participation in a variety of activities and with healthful eating practices.
  • Familiar with the San Diego area and knowledge of community recreation and health resources.
  • Function effectively as part of a team, yet able to display self-motivation to work independently in a leadership role with limited supervision.
  • Manage multiple & competing priorities; time management skills.
  • Analyze problems & solutions and take appropriate action.
  • Work well with a variety of people.
  • Provide effective direction & supervision to individuals & small groups.
  • Complete detailed work accurately & efficiently, following specific research methods & procedures.

Most work will take place during after school hours, early evenings, on weekdays and some Saturdays (approx. 1:00 8:00 pm); must be flexible in dealing with schedule changes.

Comfortable using computers, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, e-mail & internet.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bilingual skills in English and Spanish. Bachelor's degree in health, exercise, nutrition or behavioral sciences; recreation/leisure; or related field. Experience as a coordinator or supervisor in settings working with groups of families and numerous staff. Experience implementing physical activity and healthful eating opportunities and/or policies in recreation centers or community settings.

Compensation:$1500-$1800/month
