MOVE/Me Muevo (Obesity Prevention & Control in Community Recreation Centers) is a 5-yr. study (2006-2011) funded by the Nat'l Institute of Diabetes and Digestive & Kidney Diseases to design, implement & evaluate a recreation site-based obesity prevention & control project in San Diego County for 7-9 year old children and their families by emphasizing physical activity & healthful eating choices.

Responsibilities:

Under supervision of the Intervention Coordinator, this position is one of four Family Health Coaches who will work with a total of 270 families over the next 1 1/2 years to implement & monitor project activities to ensure an integrated approach that emphasizes physical activity & healthful eating choices of 5-9 year old children. This Family Health Coach position will carry out the following activities with 25 families (approx. 10 are African American):

  • Follow study protocol to provide physical activity & healthful eating education & resources, and on-site guidance to approximately 25 families and children in San Diego County.
  • Conduct phone consultations twice a month, and home visits twice a year on physical activity and healthful eating
  • Assist to facilitate & present physical activity and healthful eating interactive workshops (1.5 hours each) for 18 families each at several different recreation center sites
  • Engage families from diverse communities to participate in workshop activities
  • Develop & maintain family involvement throughout the duration of the project through consistent communication
  • Coordinate & disseminate materials & resources that promote physical activity and healthful eating
  • Guide families in utilizing community resources, especially community recreation centers
  • Advise, conduct, & monitor goal setting to increase physical activity & healthful eating choices; provide ongoing feedback & recommendations
  • Assist with the development of intervention materials
  • Complete clear and concise daily updates, documentation & evaluations of intervention activities, and maintain and file research records in a timely manner.
  • Participate in trainings, intervention meetings, staff meetings, and other meetings as requested.
  • Commit to position through December 2009.
Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:

Experience working with diverse communities, particularly the African American community. The ideal candidate is energetic, dynamic, and self-motivated. Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in health, psychology, exercise & nutritional sciences, recreation/leisure, or related field OR additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis. Public speaking experience (group workshops or trainings). Experience providing physical activity and/or healthy eating education to families and working with parents & elementary age children. Display positive role modeling through participation in active experiences and with healthful eating practices. Work effectively as part of a team. Familiar with the San Diego area and knowledge of community recreation and health resources. Work will take place during three varying shifts on weeknights from 5:00-8:00. Comfortable using computers, including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, e-mail, and internet. Reliable transportation to travel to recreation centers and homes throughout San Diego County, fingerprint background check.

Compensation:$13-$15/hr.
