The Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) Behavioral Sciences and Epidemiology Division is looking for a Statistician. This Department conducts ongoing epidemiological research on the operational impact of cancer in the military including the operational implementation of dietary supplements in the prevention of various cancers as well as other chronic diseases. The primary purpose of the epidemiological research is to support specific cancer-related projects at NHRC in the Behavioral Sciences and Epidemiology Program. These studies include (1) Research into the use and effectiveness of Vitamin D supplements in preventing cancer and other chronic diseases (2) establishment and pilot-testing of an active-duty cancer registry, and (3) the completion of six specific collaborative cohort studies involving cancer risk factors in conjunction with University of California San Diego academic staff in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine.

The primary responsibility for this Statistician is to help conduct studies and analyses of an applied nature. Work in this position will cover specific deliverables that include statistical analyses of Vitamin D in a variety of preventive scenarios, analyzing six collaborative epidemiologic studies of cancer risk factors and development and analyses of a research database for cancer studies. It also covers high-level analytic support using medical and personnel data files for epidemiological applications and epidemiological research using the Career History Archival Medical and Personnel System (CHAMPS) at NHRC. Applicants will be required to demonstrate strong statistical and database skills and an ability to work with investigators in running complex analyses and writing up procedures for publications.

Requirements:Due to federal contract regulations for this contract, US Citizenship is required.

Required Skills and Education: Strong statistical analysis skills background. Ability to write statistical methods for technical reports, journal articles, and conference papers. Strong background in statistics and research methodology. Knowledge of complex statistical methods such as logistic regression, and the use of statistical software packages such as SPSS or SAS and database programs like Excel. Familiarity with research methods, research design, and statistical analysis in a research setting. Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to research or equivalent experience in the appropriate field.

Desired: At least one year of research experience in the field of mathematics, statistics, or bio-statistics as part of a public health program is preferred. Ability to interact positively and in a professional manner within a research-oriented environment. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting. Flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities. Ability to travel (both locally and nonlocally). Familiarity with Navy medical research is beneficial. Master’s degree in mathematics, statistics, or public health with an emphasis in biostatistics and epidemiology, from an accredited college or university is preferred.
