The Homeland Protection and Preparedness business unit of SAIC currently has an opening for a Senior Life Scientist to support the Behavioral Sciences and Epidemiology Department at Naval Health Research Center (NHRC) in San Diego, CA. This NHRC Department conducts research in the area of combat stress, traumatic brain injury and the development of interventions aimed to reduce the ill psychological and cognitive health effects associated with combat. Other work includes the development and evaluation of programs designed to reduce risky health behaviors and their effects on health and performance. This research also addresses health topics such as alcohol and drug abuse, tobacco use, other mental health issues, and adverse lifestyle behaviors.

The primary responsibility for the Senior Life Scientist is to assist the NHRC Department Head in research activities and to lead efforts in conducting research studies and analyses of an applied nature. Studies will include work in the mental health field, specifically on combat and operational stress as well as traumatic brain injury. First activities will include conducting a departmental overview by pulling information from current NHRC scientific activities to develop a marketing document to facilitate NHRC branding in the field of combat and operational stress as well as traumatic brain injury research.

Requirements:The candidate should have a well-rounded multi-faceted skill set with experience in a wide variety of areas including research experience, project coordination and organization, deliverable monitoring, conducting studies and publishing results, and finance and budget. Other experience is preferred in scientific writing and drafting protocols for IRB (Institutional Review Board) consideration.

The candidate shall have a minimum of a Masters degree in psychology, sociology, public health or a related scientific field with at least 10 years of experience. A PhD is preferred with 5 years of research experience. The ideal candidate will have had experience serving in the military, working in a military environment or experience working in the field of military health for the Department of Defense (DoD) or the Veterans Administration (VA.) Demonstrated skills in understanding military health issues and interacting with senior level military personnel in developing funding lines and conducting research are preferred. Due to Federal contract regulations, U.S. citizenship or permanent resident alien status is required.

The candidate must be able to work autonomously and interact positively in a professional manner within a research-oriented environment are required. Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, possessing the ability to work cooperatively in a team setting and demonstrated flexibility in responding to changing demands, timelines, and priorities are also required. The candidate must be able to travel (both locally and nonlocally) with travel estimated at 10%.
