Preventive Medicine Residency Program
The purpose of the Preventive Medicine Residency Program is to train physicians to assure that they have adequate knowledge, attitudes, and skills germane to general preventive medicine. The physician will be eligible to sit for the board certification examination administered by the American Board of Preventive Medicine.
In addition to satisfying the requirements for admission to the University with classified graduate standing, as described in Part Two of the current SDSU Graduate Bulletin, the student seeking admission to the preventive medicine residency must fulfill the admission requirements described in MPH Admission Requirements, have completed a M.D. or D.O. degree from an accredited institution, have completed at least the internship year by the time of entry into the program, and be licensed in California by the end of the PGY-2 year or after they have received a total of 24 months of ACGME-accredited training, whichever is sooner.
The student will be expected to complete a two year course of study which involves the completion of coursework leading to an MPH degree provided by the GSPH at SDSU, and appropriate practicum experiences under the supervision of faculty of the two cooperating institutions.
The student is expected to complete the number of units required for the MPH degree as well as those additional units which may be prescribed in order to complete the practicum year, such as field practice.
The student is expected to have maintained a 3.0 average overall in the coursework at both the GSPH and UCSD Medical School. Preventive medicine residents are considered Housestaff at UCSD and participate in required clinical and population-based rotations.
