Walter Hayhow

Many of you are aware that Mr. Walter Hayhow was battling cancer. His battle began in 2007, shortly after his retirement in 2006.

Walter passed away peacefully the morning of Tuesday, July 29, 2008.

His presence and smiles are missed in the labs, offices, Hardy Tower hallways, and around the SDSU campus.

Hi Walter - Just a note to let you know I'm thinking about you and your family. Hope this is a good day. I really miss our "time for a joke or trivia" moments. In honor of those humorous - relieve the pressure times, here's one...

Change a letter in each of the following words to make them all relate to each other in a specific way.
FIERCE, FOLK, RAFT, WORD, MUSH

Answer - If you change the first letter of each word you get the name of an American president.
PIERCE, POLK, TAFT, FORD, BUSH

Probably too easy for you!

Take Care,

In the 21 years I have known you, you have always smile, always calm, and always willing to help others. You are perhaps the most approachable person I know.

Those who missed the opportunity to get to know you at a personal level truly missed a lot. Most are not even aware what a brilliant mind you have. Not only you attended both Medical School and Engineering School but you are also well read. Since your retirement, I missed our regular conversation on many topics. I enjoyed our talks in the many diverse subjects such as Evolution, Religion, Ethics, Ecology, Conservation, Politics, Planetary Science, Geology, Entomology, and Technology. You introduced me to many great books and authors. I also want to thank you for the many articles you shared with me from the 'Science' magazine. They are not easy reading but the breakthrough science articles are well worth the time spent. Over the years I have learned so much from you and I'm truly greatful for that.

It is heart breaking to hear about the challenges that are facing you now. Even during this difficult time you still managed to remain rational. I don't know how you do that. Thank you for all the helping hand that you had given me over the years. Most importantly thank you for your knowledge and friendship. Wish you, Mimi, and your extended family well.

Hey Buddy

being Acting Director in '96 and 7 really sucked, but you are one of the people who made it survivable and kept me from needing psychotherapy...your attitude was always what you show above in your photo on this web page, enjoying and knowing life at the same time. I didn't ever have much to ask of you, but when I did it it was always responded to quickly and competently. I have met few people like you in all of my days.

Walter,

We shared in life's journey only briefly but enough time for me to understand why you are so admired. Your sense of humor is engaging (dry with a twist of lemon) and the sparkle in your eyes always made me smile. Thank you for welcoming me with open arms.

Walter,

I have fond memories of you and I trying to impart science/health knowledge to students in the GSPH in the 80's. Actually, as I remember it, you were better at it than I was!!! I always enjoyed being in the laboratory with you.

When I left San Diego I wished that I could take you with me, but I knew that New York didn't have much that would attract you. I have never been associated with a colleague who had the dedication to students that you have.

I have also discovered that your interest in the really important things in life, family, friends, etc. are what our time on this planet is really about.

San Diego State University benefited greatly from the time you spent at the GSPH. Thank you!

Walter,

Your absence was keenly felt when you retired, not just because you were great at your job, but because you approached it with enthusiasm, caring, and an infectious smile. The days around here are a little dimmer without you to brighten them.

Wherever life's journey takes you, know that we, your friends, are keeping you forever in our thoughts and prayers.

Hi Walter,

I believe when you retired someone said something about how friendly you always were and I thought how very true that was.

You were always helpful to me -- I was a doctoral student and had so many questions over the years. It seemed like I could always count on you for help. Later I taught in the lab and seemed to be buzzing around both the labs with one or another thing that needed taking care of. You were patient, kind, and knowledgeable in a self-effacing way. You were always smiling, always a gentleman.

Anyway, when I look back on my recent years at SDSU in the GSPH, you bring back good memories.

My thoughts and prayers to you and your family.

You are one of my fondest memories of my time in the GSPH (Grad 2005). You always had a big smile and courteous patient manner as you introduced me to the "Smart" Classroom technology and assisted me in the GSPH computer lab. I enjoyed our thoughtful conversations so much. It was great seeing you again at the 25th anniversary celebration last spring.

Hey Walter!

So many pearls of wisdom you have shared with us... along with your terrific attitude, constant helpfulness and kindness and yes, so often a ton of giggles with your trivia quizzes, puns and other word play!

Here's one for you: Tom and his younger sister were fighting. Their mother was tired of the fighting, and decided to punish them by making them stand on the same piece of newspaper in such a way that they couldn't touch each other. How did she accomplish this?

Knowing you, you already got it!

Well, their mother slid a newspaper under a door, Tom standing on one side and his sister standing on the other.

Hi Walter,

There was so much eager anticipation of your arrival in 1986 (my first year as a student at GSPH)...so much hope that everything would be wonderfully improved in the lab. Then you arrived and we all were delighted as you eagerly attended our classes, asked a zillion relevant questions and learned what every single GSPH student needed to know (not what a single student would need to know to graduate...but what every single student for the next two decades would need, regardless of his or her specialty!).

Back then it was clear you would be a success in technical lab management. The notes posted this week are clear testimony to your success in many more important ways, too. Thank you!

The last time we spoke, you were planning for your retirement. Before I realized it, you had already retired and I never got to say thanks for all of the help that you gave to me in getting my thesis work done. Without your support and just being available to ask questions, I probably would still be in the lab today.

I am still a bit embarrassed about flooding the downstairs lab from the upstairs lab, but looking back it is a little funny (only because luckily there was no major damage).

A bunch of my former classmates have talked and we are all pulling for you.

Dear Walter.

When I read the amazing array of letters posted, I wish I could have checked off all of the above categories: friend, plus colleague, former student, current student, et al. I realize that our brief encounters were all too brief and that I am the worse off for not having worked with and known you better over the past few years. You certainly tolerated the conversations about WWU that engaged Mimi and I so often.

I know that you are approaching the current problems with a rational, calm demeanor which is an inspiration to all of the rest of us, and you have led a life that deserves our grateful thanks.

I hope each day that I will hear that you are beating the odds; you deserve it.

Love to you both.

Dear Walter,

I'm so sorry to hear about your cancer diagnosis. You have helped me so much when I was trying to work and go to school for my MPH-Epi degree at the same time, that I cannot thank you enough for everything. Remember how I used to beg you for a few more labtime minutes so that I can work on SAS/SPSS? You were gracious enough to always give in to my requests, even if it meant that you'd miss your bus, and get home late.

When I heard that you retired, I felt bad that I didn't have a chance to tell you how much I appreciated all your hard work and assistance thru all my yrs in GSPH. Thanks Walter! May God always be with you and take good care of you, so you won't be in so much pain. I'll pray for you too!

Hey there, Walter! While I was glad to get news of you, I am sorry that news includes the "Big C" for you. Surely you could have chosen a better hobby for your retirement? I want you to know you're not alone. I am a survivor of three different kinds of cancer: End-stage T-cell lymphoma (1983)--er, so much for "end-stage", eh?; Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (1984); and Breast Cancer (2003). I've been through surgeries (the sharp end of the stick), chemo (chemo-coladas), and radiation (gettin' a buzz outa life); all I can say is, "I feel your pain". Don't give up hope. Most importantly, don't lose your sense of humor-where did I put that thing? If ever you just want to chat with someone who has "been there" call me! Hugs! 619.594.109

How do you address an issue like this about someone you really like & would want to know for about a hundred more years. As is I am envious of those of you who have had the opportunity to be in his company more than I. As a Bro-in-law, living in another local I at best only got to know Walter through some emails & a few visits. What I do know about Walter is that he is human, like us all & has his human side, makes mistakes; but is kind, forgiving, intelligent, considerate & always striving to learn more & passionate about sharing the info. If miracles can happen, then this would be the time for a good one! See you sometime, Walter, either here or 'there'.

Thank you for all your help!

Hello, Walter,

I was one of your middle aged students who didn't know a lick about computers or stats when I started the program. No matter how clueless my questions, you always had a patient and informative answer. You probably intuited how much you were "the rock" that kept some of the student body from panicking! Thanks to getting through the program, I was able to start a new career at 50, really an unexpected and intriguing twist in my life.

Dear Walter,

Thank goodness we retired together! I cannot count the number of times you "saved me" and my computer. It just would not be the same without you at the GSPH. I talked to Rofiee the other day, and he told me what a nice visit he had with you. Perhaps, I could stop by and visit sometime, if that isn't too much of an imposition. As I get older I realize more and more how fragile life is, and how often it is so unfair. I'm sure you are facing this challenge with the same grace and calm that you approached all of the other challenges of your life. Hope that poinsettia you planted is still doing well. I am happy to add my thoughts about you to the wonderful things that have already been said. In academia, we often talk about the co-curricular environment, i.e., all of the things that exist outside the classroom that contributes to the education of the whole student. Essentially, that means that the environment is the glue that holds the educational endeavor together. Walter, you are that glue for your school. In effect, you are simply a star in our CHHS firmament...and a SDSU treasure.

Walter – I am so sorry that you are not well. It has occurred to me of late that when we reach that age, when there is more behind us than in front of us, that we can’t help but assess what we’ve done, what we’ve contributed. For you that should be easy. You were always, day after day, a bright spot on the campus, making our life easier, more fun, more interesting, more worthwhile. I know you touched all of us in this way. And, hundreds of students as well. The ripples from that reverberate forever, with each of the lives you have impacted made better and then passed on from them, to others. While, some come and go and nothing is changed, you came made us all better than we were before. Rich

But eventually I found what I was looking for, a woman who was a self-contained unit in her own right. My own version of Mimi. And our life together here in the hills of Vermont is full of joy and reality of the sort I never expected to find in life.

Walt

We had a great journey together in college. We laughed a lot, did incredibly crazy things together, grew up together from boys to men, and shared the nights both our sons were born with each other.

We covered many miles together on foot, on bikes, on motorcyle, and our many walks to class together. Time and distance separated us physically, but you are often in my thoughts and memories. I remember our bus trips to Children's hospital together, "stolen" christmas trees, blowguns, pumpkin smashing from the stadium, all night bull sessions, but mostly laughing. You are a great, honorable, funny, intelligent person, and I will always consider you to be my best friend.

I send you my best wishes forever.

Dear Mimi and Reid;

My sadness at Walter’s passing will soon be replaced by the lasting memory of kind and gentle spirit. We are all better for having worked with him and marveling at his dedication to our students. All the money in the world could not have purchased the love and caring that you have given Walter. No one could want a finer family that he has. May he rest in peace.

A cool guy, I liked his snapshots throughout his life, lived a full and amazing life rich with gentle connections to other human beings.

Dear Mimi, Reid, Debbie, Claire and Erin,

I'm deeply saddened by the news of Walter's death. Please accept my sincere sympathy. Walt was a brilliant, kind, and generous soul who set an amazing example for all of us to champion human rights and environmental conservation.

I wish I could be in San Diego with you to offer my love and support. Please know that thoughts and prayers are being sent your way as you cope with Walter's death.

Reid, thank you for posting the beautiful video tribute to your dad. It brought tears, as you can imagine!

Dear Mimi and Reid, I'll always remember the first time I met Walt -- he was walking up to my house with Mimi just before Reid and Debbie's wedding day in 1992. Since then, I haven't had many occasions to see him, but every one was a wonderful one for me.

Walt's wit and intelligence were strong, but it's his smile and laugh I most clearly remember. They were both infectious. I'm sorry I can't see him again.

Reid and Mimi, you were more courageous than any of the rest of us can imagine in your care for Walt during these recent times. I'm sure Walt knew he was loved very much. My very best to you both.

Dear Mimi, Reid and other Hayhows,

The labs and halls of the GSPH feel more still this week than I can remember. But Walter's memory and good works will remain prominent here for a very very long time.

Those of us who worked with him over the years will be reminded of his tremendous organizational, technical, and teaching abilities wherever we go about our business here. Labels and instructional signs in his neat, clear hand. Countless student thesis copies expressing gratitude for his help and support.

I hope you already know how much Walter was appreciated here and by so many. Although sorry to see him retire, we clearly understood his priority to spend more time with family. Thank you for sharing him with us as long as you did.

As I read through all of the comments before Walter's death, I realized that I knew so little about Walter's life. We had wonderful conversations about the philosophy of science and yet I never knew he had children and grandchildren, that he had gone to school for both medicine and engineering, that he was a naturalist at heart...I could go on an on.

This has been a very painful reminder to me that our time on earth is short. No one is going to put your publications on your tombstone!

In Walter's honor, ask people you work with about their lives, tell the people you love that you adore them, stop and check out the beetle on the pavement, etc...etc...
