The DrPH is structured as a hybrid-modality cohort model for 48 academic credits involving both synchronous and asynchronous coursework. Except for the first summer of year 1, courses are held on-line.
The program starts in Fall, Year 1, and should be completed by Spring, Year 3. In general, courses run for 8 weeks, with 2 courses each in Fall, Spring, and Summer. Students should expect to study throughout both Summer 1 and Summer 2. A dissertation is required by the State of California, which can vary in number of units, but not exceed 12 units.
The program is designed to be completed by working professionals in three years including two summer sessions, with the first summer attending in-person class sessions in San Diego for approximately 2-weeks and the second summer on-site at an organization of the student’s choice. Except for the in-person class sessions in summers, classes are held online usually once per week, with additional student work during the week promoting competency attainment and student interaction. The program of study emphasizes pragmatic application of concepts and practice. A study tour and practice analysis are completed in Summer Year 1. An Applied Practice Experience of 3 units is completed in Summer Year 2. The Dissertation meets the CEPH requirements for an Integrative Learning Experience.
