Bio
Dr. Kai-Chung Cheng is an Assistant Professor in the division of Environmental Health at the School of Public Health and in Imperial Valley at San Diego State University. He has expertise in indoor air quality assessment and aerosol characterization. He has evaluated the effect of air purifier on indoor PM2.5 and asthma in children for low-income families in Fresno, CA. He took the lead on a project that evaluated secondhand exposures close to marijuana smokers, offering insight into recommended minimum distances from cannabis smoking. He is also interested in technology development for accurate exposure assessment. He created a model that generalizes higher exposures close to indoor emissions, using room size and ventilation. The model has been used to inform social distancing guidelines to minimize the COVID-19 transmission. Using indoor positioning, he developed a mobile mapping method to track time-varying locations and exposures of occupants. He also created a machine learning approach to identify and differentiate between different air pollution emissions.
