This spring marks 30 years since my decision to apply to the Graduate School of Public Health. As a member of the 5th graduating class with an emphasis in Health Services Administration I can’t count the number of times I have told people that they should consider our program. As I look back on my career in healthcare and what I have been fortunate enough to accomplish, I credit much of my success to my roots with the GSPH.
I could not be more excited to be leading the Alumni Board comprised of graduates from the past 3 decades covering all disciplines. Being back on campus has been amazing. While many things remain the same: being the only accredited Graduate School of Public Health in San Diego, the choice of thesis vs. comp exam and the historic Hardy Tower other things have sure changed: Health Services Administration is now Health Management & Policy and we now offer a Bachelors in Public Health and joint doctoral degrees with UCSD.
For the university in general more has changed than has remained the same. Viejas Arena has taken the place of what was known as Aztec Bowl, Monty’s Den and the student center of the past have been replaced with the amazing Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union– a site worth seeing if you haven’t been on campus. The SDSU Basketball team, led by Coach Fisher, has made it to the NCAA Tournament for 6 of the last 6 years in a row – and there is a waiting list for season tickets. It’s a great time to be an AZTEC!
Our newly formed GSPH Alumni Association is actively planning social/networking events for current students and alumni, we are planning our first annual alumni tailgater during football season and are making plans for an annual community service day in collaboration with the university-wide SDSU Alumni Association.
Each and every one of us is vital to the future of the GSPH future and we hope you will join us on this adventure. Whether you live in San Diego or anywhere in the world we hope you will connect with us and establish yourself as an Aztec For Life! To be added to our alumni list, please complete this form.
Looking forward to the great things we will do together,
Barb Robinette, ’86, MPH ’89
