Students 4 Public Health (S4PH) is an undergraduate student organization which aims to aid SDSU students and the San Diego community at large by promoting healthy behaviors and fostering the growth of future public health professionals. The group regularly designs ambitious programs such as the Sexploration workshop series and a networking trip to Washington, D.C., and they obtain grant funding for these programs with the support of faculty and Undergraduate Program Director Dr. Jennifer Felner.
This year, the group’s board (pictured) obtained grant funding to support their Global Public Health Brigade Spring Break trip to Honduras. Scheduled for spring break during the first week of April 23, primarily Spanish-speaking public health students will work alongside Honduran residents and the local Basic Sanitation Committee. Friends of MSF at SDSU will help these students prepare for the trip with a workshop series focused on cultural and linguistic competency as well and simulate some of the tasks they anticipate performing while on the trip. The students will perform household surveys so that a needs assessment of the Honduran community’s public health strengths and challenges, particularly regarding water sanitation, can be documented and a promising intervention can be designed.
