Aztec Scholarships

Complete your FAFSA Application each year as soon after October 1 as possible. The SDSU Scholarship Application is open from March 15, 2021, to July 30, 2021. The priority application deadline is April 15, 2021. Deadlines are strictly enforced and no late submissions are accepted. All scholarship applications must be submitted through the Aztec Scholarship Portal.

Scholarships for SPH Students

Remember all applications are processed through theAztec Scholarships Portal and are subject to a deadline (open from March 15, 2021, to July 30, 2021): 

Opportunity Amount:$2,400.00

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Undergraduate students are not required to be enrolled full-time.
  • Graduate students are not required to be enrolled full-time.

Purpose: The Eileen and Humberto Monge Scholarship will provide scholarship support to students in the School of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Services.

Requirements:

  • Recipients must be upper division undergraduate students in the School of Public Health with an emphasis in community health education. (All Public Health majors have an emphasis in community health education).
  • Recipients must have completed 60 units in the major.
  • Recipients must have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.50 out of 4.00, or the arithmetic equivalent.
  • Demonstration of financial need, as defined by the SDSU Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, is required.

Award Parameters: Each scholarship shall have a minimum value of $1,500, not to exceed the funds available in the scholarship account. The number of awards shall be determined by the scholarship committee based on the availability of funds.

Opportunity Amount: $563.00

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Undergraduate students are not required to be enrolled full-time.
  • Graduate students are not required to be enrolled full-time.

Opportunity Amount: $2,000.00

Enrollment Requirements:

  • You must be enrolled half-time to remain eligible for this scholarship. If your enrollment drops below half-time, your scholarship may be canceled.

Purpose: The LT Florence B. Choe Memorial Endowed Scholarship is an endowment whose annual income distributions will be used to support scholarships for graduate students enrolled in San Diego State University’s Graduate School of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Services.

Requirements:

  • Recipients will be graduate students pursuing a program of study in the Graduate School of Public Health.
  • Recipients must be enrolled at least part-time each semester.
  • The scholarship is not renewable.
  • Applicants must submit an essay of 500 words or less discussing why they chose (or plan to enter) a professional career in public health. Applicants should describe balancing work and family life, the inner drive that keeps them motivated, and how one person can make a difference.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are first generation college students, so applicant essays should also indicate if they fit this criterion.

Award Parameters: One or more awards with values between $500 and $2,000 will be made each year and shall be determined by the scholarship committee based on the availability of funds. No more than $2,000 total will be awarded in any one academic year.

Enrollment Requirements:

  • Graduate students are not required to be enrolled full-time.

Purpose: The John O. and Mary L. Anderson Memorial Endowed Scholarship will be an endowment whose annual income distributions will be used to support graduate student scholarship(s) within the Graduate School of Public Health in the College of Health and Human Services.

Requirements:

  • Recipients will be pursuing a program of study in Public Health, and be at the graduate level.
  • Recipients must have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00, or the arithmetic equivalent.
  • Demonstration of financial need, as defined by the SDSU Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships, is required for initial consideration.
  • Applicants must submit a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Prior recipients must submit a renewal application to be considered for renewal of a scholarship award.
  • Prior recipients must continue to meet all the scholarship eligibility to be eligible for renewal of a scholarship award.

Open Education Database PhD Scholarships

Finding scholarships as a PhD student can be much more challenging than as an undergrad. With far fewer scholarship opportunities available, most PhD candidates struggle to make ends meet. As college costs continue to rise, our college planning experts at OEDB.org are looking to ease the burden of student debt, by making scholarships easily accessible for all types of students.

Tuition Assistance for Out-of-State and Foreign Students

In California, all students are required to pay a registration fee based on the number of units in which they enroll. In addition to this fee, nonresidents of California, including international students, pay tuition of approximately $339 per unit.

The Graduate Division often makes funds available to assist with tuition. Applicants for the tuition assistance program must be permanent residents or citizens of the U.S., or a nonresident who is a citizen and resident of a foreign country. Assistance is provided on a semester-by-semester basis only for students who hold appointments as teaching associates, graduate assistants, or a combination of the two, requiring a workload of approximately 20 hours per week.

Graduate Equity Fellowship Program

The Graduate Equity Fellowship Program provides support for economically disadvantaged graduate students, especially from groups that are under-represented within their respective disciplines. Only legal residents of California who can demonstrate significant financial need are eligible. Recipients must be classified graduate students and must enroll for a minimum of nine units of coursework each semester they hold the fellowship. The amount of the fellowship ranges from $500 to $4,000 for an academic year depending on demonstrated need. Students may receive awards for a maximum of two academic years, but they must apply each year.

  • Interested students should contact the SDSU Division of Graduate Affairs for more detailed information and to obtain an application and should complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Graduate Equity Fellowship will be due in September, while FAFSA should be filed in October of the previous year.

National Fellowships

The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships receives annual announcements of Fulbright, Marshall, Kent, Rotary, and other national fellowship programs. Since each campus is limited in the number of applications it may endorse, students interested in fellowships of this type are encouraged to discuss their applications with the Scholarship Director and with members of the university faculty who have themselves received these fellowships. Since test scores from the GRE General Test are required, students should take this examination well in advance of the deadline date for the submission of applications.

Forgivable Loan/Doctoral Incentive Program

The California State University (CSU) provides funds each year for the purpose of increasing the diversity of qualified applicants for instructional faculty positions at its various campuses. This program offers loans up to $10,000 per year to a total of $30,000 while the student is enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at an approved and accredited institution. Loans are subsequently forgiven at a rate of 20 percent for each year of full-time teaching in the CSU.
