San Diego State University’s School of Public Health (SPH) graduate program is ranked one of the best in the nation–at No.19 of 190 accredited schools in the U.S. News & World Report 2023.
“We are both proud and humbled by this recognition,” said Eyal Oren, interim director of SPH. “Our commitment and engagement with students, our success in preparing a diverse public health workforce as well as our distinct focus on community-based work and health equities are all defining features of our school.”
Founded in 1981, SPH is part of SDSU’s College of Health and Human Services. The graduate school provides a diverse range of master’s degrees in environmental health, epidemiology, health promotion & behavioral science, and health management & policy–while its Ph.D.’s are in epidemiology, health behavior, and global health.
Awarded a record $24 million in external grants and contracts in the fiscal year 2020-21–from sources that include the National Institutes of Health, the relatively small public health school leveraged its longstanding community partnerships to assist and enhance COVID-19 mitigation efforts with the County of San Diego’s Health and Human Services agency.
“Our school’s engagement during the COVID-19 pandemic exemplifies some of the best qualities in our school. We continue to be involved in regional, state, and national issues” said Dr. Oren.
The ongoing pandemic, racial inequality, and other social determinants of health continue to drive “public health” issues into national and household hotspots. SDSU’s School of Public Health is dedicated to addressing these immediate and future needs in all communities, said Dr. Oren.
“The School of Public Health has a longstanding commitment to addressing community needs, underrepresented racial/ethnic minority priorities, and first-generation college students, engaging in and teaching the principles of community-based research, and translating academic knowledge into practice in partnership with health and social agencies and entire communities.”
U.S. News and World Report said its rankings are based on peer assessments and data from fall 2021 to early 2022. Please click on the SDSU NewsCenter story for a complete list of SDSU 2023 rankings in this year’s U.S. News & World Report.
